DHI hair transplant

DHI hair transplant technique: A new method or marketing strategy?

While some studies consider the DHI hair transplant technique a new method of hair transplantation, certain scientific sources argue that it is not a new technique, but rather a marketing strategy. They claim that this method is simply a variation of the FUE technique performed with an implanter.

How is hair transplantation performed using the DHI technique?

The DHI technique can be explained as a method in which hair follicles are extracted from the donor area and implanted directly into the recipient area without the need to create channels beforehand, unlike the FUE method. The implanter/Choi needle, which has a very fine, cylindrical, and sharp structure, functions like a channel. The hair follicles are inserted into the needle and then advanced along the channel for implantation.

Phases of DHI hair transplantation

During hair transplantation with the Choi Implanter Pen, hair follicles are carefully inserted into the pen one by one. After the assistants have placed the follicles, they are handed over to the specialist for implantation. The doctor then implants the follicles at an angle of 40-45 degrees. Another important factor is that the transplant must follow the person's natural hair direction.

After the hair follicles are inserted into the Choi needle and the angle and direction are determined, the follicles are implanted using the needle's push function. Between 2 and 6 Choi pins and 15-16 Choi tips can be used in this procedure. The size of the pin tips can vary depending on the thickness and structure of the hair follicles.

The DHI hair transplant has several advantages and disadvantages compared to the FUE method.

Advantages of the DHI technique

Here are some of the key benefits highlighted by experts:

  • It minimizes the time the hair follicles spend outside the tissue, resulting in a healthier transplant.

  • The survival rate of hair follicles is higher.

  • Fewer incisions are made, reducing the risk of bleeding.

  • Recovery is faster, allowing the person to return to everyday life in a short time.

  • This technique allows for hair transplantation without shaving, which is easier to perform.

Disadvantages of the DHI technique

There are some disadvantages compared to the FUE method, including:

  • Doctors and their teams must undergo extensive training to master this technique.

  • It is more expensive than other methods.

  • The person performing the transplant must be highly skilled and in excellent physical condition. Because the transplant area is narrow, inexperienced practitioners can damage the surrounding hair follicles while working in such a confined space.

A pain-free method for hair transplantation!

With sedation under the supervision of an anesthesiologist, even the local anesthesia procedures prior to hair transplantation are painless, resulting in a more comfortable, pain-free experience. Hair transplantation procedures are generally not very painful, and this method is particularly comfortable for individuals with needle phobia. With this approach, the minimal pain normally experienced is almost completely eliminated.

Sedation is an individually adjustable, scalable sleep state achieved with sedative medications that preserves reflexes while controlling the depth of sleep. This technique can even be used on children and makes hair transplantation painless. However, the decision to use sedation is entirely up to the patient.

Is DHI hair transplantation suitable for everyone?

The method was first used at Kyungpook University in Korea. Research has shown that not every patient is suitable for a Choi-tip hair transplant. This is due to the difficulty of inserting fine and curly hair follicles into the implanter tip without damaging them. Subsequent studies led to the development of implanter pens suitable for a wider range of hair types, not just thick Asian hair. The implanter pens used today have a diameter of 0.64 mm to 1.0 mm. Thanks to scientific and technological advances, Choi-tip hair transplantation is now performed safely. Therefore, Choi-tip hair transplants in specialized clinics offer effective and predictable, natural-looking results.
